State of Matter in collaboration with RidersCollective
We wish you a safe ride
“The only requirement for a job as a food delivery person is to be able to ride a bike,” said one CEO of a delivery platform. In fact, the delivery workers - mostly migrants - have almost no or no worker protection. Many are desperately dependent on these jobs, which drives exploitation. Precarious employment relationships based on freelance contracts are unfortunately very common in Austria. The collective agreement does not apply due to the form of the contract; where it would apply, there is still no agreement after almost a year. During WIEN WOCHE, State of Matter (SoM), in cooperation with the RidersCollective, is calling for active solidarity by bringing the public together with the drivers to take over their work shifts on a solidarity basis. In this way, riders can use the 'off-duty' time to learn more about their rights and connect with colleagues from whom they are deliberately separated by the working conditions dictated by the delivery platforms.
In order to deepen knowledge about trade unions, informal forms of organization and the prevailing working conditions, the project team offers daily workshops. The doors to the workshop program will be opened to the festival audience. There will be performative onboarding sessions as well as events to relax after work and for a cozy get-together. A documentation of the work process and portraits of the participants will be presented.
In the long term, the RidersCollective aims to achieve more solidarity, union representation and good working conditions for platform riders in Austria and everywhere.

How-to Organize
workshop with Sandra Stern
We work for the same company and often have the same problems: poor pay, bad treatment in restaurants, no respect. In this workshop, we will discuss how we can join forces and achieve better working conditions together. We ride on our own - but never walk alone!
Sandra Stern works as a social worker, in trade union adult education and teaches at universities of applied sciences for social work. Sandra is co-founder of the UNDOK contact point and the Bureau for Self-Organisation.
Together with trade union colleagues, Sandra Stern has written the handbook ‘Organising with works councilors - asserting our concerns in the workplace’. It describes helpful steps and tools on how we can successfully organise together with our colleagues. The handbook can be downloaded from the accompanying website. Trade union members can order the handbook free of charge: https://organizing.at/
